Description: Homo sapiens interleukin 1 receptor, type II (IL1R2), transcript variant 3, mRNA. RefSeq Summary (NM_001261419): The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine receptor that belongs to the interleukin 1 receptor family. This protein binds interleukin alpha (IL1A), interleukin beta (IL1B), and interleukin 1 receptor, type I(IL1R1/IL1RA), and acts as a decoy receptor that inhibits the activity of its ligands. Interleukin 4 (IL4) is reported to antagonize the activity of interleukin 1 by inducing the expression and release of this cytokine. This gene and three other genes form a cytokine receptor gene cluster on chromosome 2q12. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants and protein isoforms. Alternative splicing produces both membrane-bound and soluble proteins. A soluble protein is also produced by proteolytic cleavage. [provided by RefSeq, May 2012]. ID:IL1R2_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Interleukin-1 receptor type 2; Short=IL-1R-2; Short=IL-1RT-2; Short=IL-1RT2; AltName: Full=CD121 antigen-like family member B; AltName: Full=CDw121b; AltName: Full=IL-1 type II receptor; AltName: Full=Interleukin-1 receptor beta; Short=IL-1R-beta; AltName: Full=Interleukin-1 receptor type II; AltName: CD_antigen=CD121b; Contains: RecName: Full=Interleukin-1 receptor type 2, membrane form; Short=mIL-1R2; Short=mIL-1RII; Contains: RecName: Full=Interleukin-1 receptor type 2, soluble form; Short=sIL-1R2; Short=sIL-1RII; Flags: Precursor; FUNCTION: Non-signaling receptor for IL1A, IL1B and IL1RN. Reduces IL1B activities. Serves as a decoy receptor by competetive binding to IL1B and preventing its binding to IL1R1. Also modulates cellular response through non-signaling association with IL1RAP after binding to IL1B. IL1R2 (membrane and secreted forms) preferentially binds IL1B and poorly IL1A and IL1RN. The secreted IL1R2 recruits secreted IL1RAP with high affinity; this complex formation may be the dominant mechanism for neutralization of IL1B by secreted/soluble receptors. SUBUNIT: Associates with IL1RAP to form a non-signaling interleukin-1 receptor complex. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Isoform Short: Secreted. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Isoform Long: Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. PTM: A soluble form (sIL1R2) can also be produced by proteolytic cleavage at the cell surface (shedding) involving a metalloproteinase; hovever, several sIL1R2 forms ranging from 45 and 60 kDa are reported. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the interleukin-1 receptor family. SIMILARITY: Contains 3 Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin-like) domains. The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
