Description: Homo sapiens BPI fold containing family A, member 1 (BPIFA1), transcript variant 1, mRNA. RefSeq Summary (NM_016583): This gene is the human homolog of murine plunc, and like the mouse gene, is specifically expressed in the upper airways and nasopharyngeal regions. The encoded antimicrobial protein displays antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. It is thought to be involved in inflammatory responses to irritants in the upper airways and may also serve as a potential molecular marker for detection of micrometastasis in non-small-cell lung cancer. Multiple transcript variants resulting from alternative splicing in the 3' UTR have been detected, but the full-length nature of only three are known. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2014]. ID:BPIA1_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=BPI fold-containing family A member 1; AltName: Full=Lung-specific protein X; AltName: Full=Nasopharyngeal carcinoma-related protein; AltName: Full=Palate lung and nasal epithelium clone protein; AltName: Full=Secretory protein in upper respiratory tracts; AltName: Full=Tracheal epithelium-enriched protein; AltName: Full=Von Ebner protein Hl; Flags: Precursor; FUNCTION: May be involved in the airway inflammatory response after exposure to irritants. May be associated with tumor progression. May play a role in innate immune responses of the upper airways. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Secreted (By similarity). Note=Found in the nasal mucus (By similarity). Apical side of airway epithelial cells. Detected in nasal mucus (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Lung, upper airways and nasopharyngeal regions, including trachea and nasal epithelium. Specifically expressed in the secretory ducts and submucosal glands of tracheobronchial tissues. Highest expression in the trachea and progressive decrease from proximal (bronchial) to distal (bronchiolar) airways. Also expressed in lung cancers and some other types of cancer. INDUCTION: By all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). PTM: May be N-glycosylated. MISCELLANEOUS: Binds lipopolysaccharides. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the BPI/LBP/Plunc superfamily. Plunc family.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
