Human Gene MRPL41 (uc004cnh.4)
  Description: Homo sapiens mitochondrial ribosomal protein L41 (MRPL41), nuclear gene encoding mitochondrial protein, mRNA.
RefSeq Summary (NM_032477): Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and help in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammalian mitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter contain a 5S rRNA. Among different species, the proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly in sequence, and sometimes in biochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein that belongs to the YmL27 ribosomal protein family. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].

  ID: RM41_HUMAN
DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=39S ribosomal protein L41, mitochondrial; Short=L41mt; Short=MRP-L41; AltName: Full=39S ribosomal protein L27 homolog; AltName: Full=Bcl-2-interacting mitochondrial ribosomal protein L41; AltName: Full=Cell proliferation-inducing gene 3 protein; AltName: Full=MRP-L27 homolog; Flags: Precursor;
FUNCTION: Component of the mitochondrial ribosome large subunit. Also involved in apoptosis and cell cycle. Enhances p53/TP53 stability, thereby contributing to p53/TP53-induced apoptosis in response to growth-inhibitory condition. Enhances p53/TP53 translocation to the mitochondria. Has the ability to arrest the cell cycle at the G1 phase, possibly by stabilizing the CDKN1A and CDKN1B (p27Kip1) proteins.
SUBUNIT: Component of the mitochondrial ribosome large subunit (39S) which comprises a 16S rRNA and about 50 distinct proteins. Interacts with BCL2.
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Mitochondrion.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Present in kidney, liver, thymus and testis, and at lower level in brain and spleen (at protein level).
SIMILARITY: Belongs to the ribosomal protein L41 family.

-  Orthologous Genes in Other Species
  Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
