Description: Homo sapiens activating transcription factor 6 beta (ATF6B), transcript variant 1, mRNA. RefSeq Summary (NM_004381): The protein encoded by this gene is a transcription factor in the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway during ER stress. Either as a homodimer or as a heterodimer with ATF6-alpha, the encoded protein binds to the ER stress response element, interacting with nuclear transcription factor Y to activate UPR target genes. The protein is normally found in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum; however, under ER stress, the N-terminal cytoplasmic domain is cleaved from the rest of the protein and translocates to the nucleus. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008]. ID:ATF6B_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-6 beta; Short=cAMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-6 beta; AltName: Full=Activating transcription factor 6 beta; Short=ATF6-beta; AltName: Full=Protein G13; AltName: Full=cAMP response element-binding protein-related protein; Short=Creb-rp; AltName: Full=cAMP-responsive element-binding protein-like 1; Contains: RecName: Full=Processed cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-6 beta; FUNCTION: Transcriptional factor that acts in the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway by activating UPR target genes induced during ER stress. Binds DNA on the 5'-CCAC[GA]-3' half of the ER stress response element (ERSE) (5'-CCAATN(9)CCAC[GA]-3') when NF-Y is bound to ERSE. SUBUNIT: Homodimer and heterodimer with ATF6-alpha. The dimer interacts with the nuclear transcription factor Y (NF-Y) trimer through direct binding to NF-Y subunit C (NF-YC). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Processed cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-6 beta: Nucleus. Note=Under ER stress the cleaved N- terminal cytoplasmic domain translocates into the nucleus. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Ubiquitous. DOMAIN: The basic domain functions as a nuclear localization signal. DOMAIN: The basic leucine-zipper domain is sufficient for association with the NF-Y trimer and binding to ERSE. PTM: N-glycosylated. PTM: During unfolded protein response an approximative 60 kDa fragment containing the cytoplasmic transcription factor domain is released by proteolysis. The cleavage is probably performed sequentially by site-1 and site-2 proteases. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the bZIP family. ATF subfamily. SIMILARITY: Contains 1 bZIP (basic-leucine zipper) domain. SEQUENCE CAUTION: Sequence=AAC50888.1; Type=Frameshift; Positions=600; Sequence=AAG14898.1; Type=Frameshift; Positions=600;
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
