Human Gene HOPX (ENST00000420433.6) from GENCODE V44
Description: Homo sapiens HOP homeobox (HOPX), transcript variant 1, mRNA. (from RefSeq NM_032495) RefSeq Summary (NM_032495): The protein encoded by this gene is a homeodomain protein that lacks certain conserved residues required for DNA binding. It was reported that choriocarcinoma cell lines and tissues failed to express this gene, which suggested the possible involvement of this gene in malignant conversion of placental trophoblasts. Studies in mice suggest that this protein may interact with serum response factor (SRF) and modulate SRF-dependent cardiac-specific gene expression and cardiac development. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]. ID:HOP_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Homeodomain-only protein; AltName: Full=Lung cancer-associated Y protein; AltName: Full=Not expressed in choriocarcinoma protein 1; AltName: Full=Odd homeobox protein 1; FUNCTION: Atypical homeodomain protein which does not bind DNA and is required to modulate cardiac growth and development. Acts via its interaction with SRF, thereby modulating the expression of SRF-dependent cardiac-specific genes and cardiac development. Prevents SRF-dependent transcription either by inhibiting SRF binding to DNA or by recruiting histone deacetylase (HDAC) proteins that prevent transcription by SRF. Overexpression causes cardiac hypertrophy (By similarity). May act as a tumor suppressor. SUBUNIT: Interacts with serum response factor (SRF). Component of a large complex containing histone deacetylases such as HDAC2 (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Widely expressed. Expressed in the heart, brain, placenta, lung, skeletal and smooth muscles, uterus, urinary bladder, kidney and spleen. Down-regulated in some types of cancer such as lung cancer, choriocarcinoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and oral squamous cell carcinoma. SIMILARITY: Contains 1 homeobox DNA-binding domain.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
