RefSeq Summary (NM_009975): This gene encodes the beta subunit of the casein kinase 2 enzyme, which is a heterotetramer comprised of alpha and/or alpha-prime catalytic subunits and two regulatory beta subunits. Casein kinase 2 is involved in the regulation of several cellular processes including gene expression, protein synthesis and cell proliferation. Knockout of this gene in mice leads to embryonic lethality. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2015].

FUNCTION: Plays a complex role in regulating the basal catalytic activity of the alpha subunit (By similarity). Participates in Wnt signaling.
SUBUNIT: Tetramer composed of an alpha subunit, an alpha' subunit and two beta subunits. The beta subunit dimerization is mediated by zinc ions. Interacts with CD163. Also component of a CK2-SPT16- SSRP1 complex composed of SSRP1, SUPT16H, CSNK2A1, CSNK2A2 and CSNK2B, the complex associating following UV irradiation (By similarity). Interacts with TCTEX1D3. Interacts with MUSK; mediates phosphorylation of MUSK by CK2.
