Human Gene UGP2 (ENST00000394417.7) from GENCODE V44
Description: Homo sapiens UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase 2 (UGP2), transcript variant 7, mRNA. (from RefSeq NM_001377528) RefSeq Summary (NM_001001521): The enzyme encoded by this gene is an important intermediary in mammalian carbohydrate interconversions. It transfers a glucose moiety from glucose-1-phosphate to MgUTP and forms UDP-glucose and MgPPi. In liver and muscle tissue, UDP-glucose is a direct precursor of glycogen; in lactating mammary gland it is converted to UDP-galactose which is then converted to lactose. The eukaryotic enzyme has no significant sequence similarity to the prokaryotic enzyme. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. ID:UGPA_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=UTP--glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase; EC=2.7.7.9; AltName: Full=UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase; Short=UDPGP; Short=UGPase; FUNCTION: Plays a central role as a glucosyl donor in cellular metabolic pathways. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: UTP + alpha-D-glucose 1-phosphate = diphosphate + UDP-glucose. SUBUNIT: Homooctamer (By similarity). INTERACTION: P62993:GRB2; NbExp=2; IntAct=EBI-743729, EBI-401755; SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the UDPGP type 1 family. CAUTION: The human genome was initially thought to contain 2 genes for UTP--glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase: UGP1 and UGP2. However, the sequence defined as UGP1 (PubMed:8354390) probably does not exist and corresponds to UGP2.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
