Human Gene GFRA2 (ENST00000524240.6) from GENCODE V44
Description: Homo sapiens GDNF family receptor alpha 2 (GFRA2), transcript variant 1, mRNA. (from RefSeq NM_001495) RefSeq Summary (NM_001495): Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and neurturin (NTN) are two structurally related, potent neurotrophic factors that play key roles in the control of neuron survival and differentiation. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the GDNF receptor family. It is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol(GPI)-linked cell surface receptor for both GDNF and NTN, and mediates activation of the RET tyrosine kinase receptor. This encoded protein acts preferentially as a receptor for NTN compared to its other family member, GDNF family receptor alpha 1. This gene is a candidate gene for RET-associated diseases. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]. ID:GFRA2_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=GDNF family receptor alpha-2; Short=GDNF receptor alpha-2; Short=GDNFR-alpha-2; Short=GFR-alpha-2; AltName: Full=GDNF receptor beta; Short=GDNFR-beta; AltName: Full=Neurturin receptor alpha; Short=NRTNR-alpha; Short=NTNR-alpha; AltName: Full=RET ligand 2; AltName: Full=TGF-beta-related neurotrophic factor receptor 2; Flags: Precursor; FUNCTION: Receptor for neurturin. Mediates the NRTN-induced autophosphorylation and activation of the RET receptor. Also able to mediate GDNF signaling through the RET tyrosine kinase receptor. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cell membrane; Lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Isoform 1 is found in both brain and placenta. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the GDNFR family.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
