ID:TOM34_MOUSE DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Mitochondrial import receptor subunit TOM34; AltName: Full=Translocase of outer membrane 34 kDa subunit; FUNCTION: Plays a role in the import of cytosolically synthesized preproteins into mitochondria. Binds the mature portion of precursor proteins. Interacts with cellular components, and possesses weak ATPase activity. May be a chaperone-like protein that helps to keep newly synthesized precursors in an unfolded import compatible state (By similarity). SUBUNIT: Interacts with HSP90A, VCP, ATP6M, KIAA0665, AMPK, and DMAP1 through its TPR repeat (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm (By similarity). Mitochondrion outer membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Isoform 1 is ubiquitously expressed while isoform 2 is expressed only in mature testicular germ cells. Isoform 1 is expressed in all testicular cells. Isoform 2 is highly expressed in early to late pachytene cells but expression is significantly decreased in round spermatid cells. DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE: Isoform 2 is hardly detectable in testis at 1 week post partum but expression gradually increases for 2 to 4 weeks post partum. Isoform 1 is detected during this period but its expression does not change. DISRUPTION PHENOTYPE: Mice are viable, grow normally and both males and females are fertile. There is no effect on spermatogenesis or protein import into mitochondria. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the Tom34 family. SIMILARITY: Contains 6 TPR repeats.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
