  ID: IPO8_MOUSE
DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Importin-8; Short=Imp8; AltName: Full=Ran-binding protein 8; Short=RanBP8;
FUNCTION: Seems to function in nuclear protein import, either by acting as autonomous nuclear transport receptor or as an adapter- like protein in association with the importin-beta subunit KPNB1. Acting autonomously, is thought to serve itself as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) and to promote translocation of import substrates through the nuclear pore complex (NPC) by an energy requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to importin, the importin/substrate complex dissociates and importin is re-exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The directionality of nuclear import is thought to be conferred by an asymmetric distribution of the GTP- and GDP-bound forms of Ran between the cytoplasm and nucleus. In vitro mediates the nuclear import of SRP19 (By similarity).
SUBUNIT: Forms a heterodimer with KPNB1. Interacts with SRP19. Binds directly to nuclear pore complexes (By similarity).
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm (By similarity). Nucleus (By similarity).
SIMILARITY: Belongs to the importin beta family.
SIMILARITY: Contains 1 importin N-terminal domain.
CAUTION: The regions from 407 to 653 were deduced from the genomic sequence and ESTs by similarity to the human sequence.

The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.

-  Orthologous Genes in Other Species
  Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
