ID:3BHS7_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 7; AltName: Full=3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type VII; Short=3-beta-HSD VII; AltName: Full=3-beta-hydroxy-Delta(5)-C27 steroid oxidoreductase; Short=C(27) 3-beta-HSD; EC=1.1.1.-; AltName: Full=Cholest-5-ene-3-beta,7-alpha-diol 3-beta-dehydrogenase; EC=1.1.1.181; FUNCTION: The 3-beta-HSD enzymatic system plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of all classes of hormonal steroids. HSD VII is active against four 7-alpha-hydroxylated sterols. Does not metabolize several different C(19/21) steroids as substrates. Involved in bile acid synthesis. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: 3-beta-hydroxy-Delta(5)-steroid + NAD(+) = 3- oxo-Delta(5)-steroid + NADH. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: Cholest-5-ene-3-beta,7-alpha-diol + NAD(+) = 7-alpha-hydroxycholest-4-en-3-one + NADH. PATHWAY: Lipid metabolism; steroid biosynthesis. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. DISEASE: Defects in HSD3B7 are the cause of congenital bile acid synthesis defect type 1 (CBAS1) [MIM:607765]; also known as neonatal progressive intrahepatic cholestasis. CBAS1 is due to a primary defect in bile synthesis leading to progressive liver disease. Clinical features include neonatal jaundice, severe intrahepatic cholestasis and cirrhosis. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the 3-beta-HSD family.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
